Explore the tension of a city in turmoil and devastating impact of the riots following the Rodney King verdict had across L.A. in this remarkable play about race, class, justice, and ethnic identity.
Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 is a stunning work of documentary theatre that explores the devastating human impact of the five days of riots following the Rodney King verdict. Playwright, actor, and scholar Anna Deavere Smith interviewed more than two hundred people, choosing the voices that best reflected the diversity and tension of a city in turmoil. The play presents the viewpoints of a disabled Korean man, a white male Hollywood talent agent, a Panamanian immigrant mother, a teenage black gang member, a macho Mexican-American artist, Rodney King's aunt, beaten truck driver Reginald Denny, former Los Angeles police chief Daryl Gates, and other witnesses, participants, and victims. Smith’s powerful solo work of verbatim theatre about the violent aftermath of the Rodney King verdict has been expanded from a one-person show.
Mosaic Players' production, directed by Rebecca Zellar, is performed by four actors - Renee Johnson, Gary Luz, Allison Fradkin, and Chris Riter - playing multiple real people who were connected directly or indirectly to the riots.
Daniel Esquivel is the set designer and Daniel Melendez is the sound designer for the traveling production. Bonnie Hart is stage managing and Jeanna Daebelliehn is Assistant Stage Manager.
Mosaic Players, based in Antioch, Illinois, is a nonprofit 501(c)3 traveling ensemble that creates and performs theatre focused on social justice, human rights, and anti-racist issues while promoting dignity, equity, inclusion, understanding, and respect. Their first traveling production of On the Verge reached audiences in Antioch, Lake Villa, and Lindenhurst.
